Phonics

Phonics is a method for teaching reading and writing of the English language by developing learners' phonemic awareness - the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate phonemes in order to teach the correspondence between these sounds and the spelling patterns (graphemes) that represent them.

At Summerlea we ensure the teaching and learning of phonics is fun and child-centred. We ensure that our phonics sessions are well-paced, multi-sensory and motivating so that all pupils can achieve.

We have recently moved to the 'Twinkl' phonics scheme, which is a validated systematic synthetic phonics programme. We use this to support the teaching of phonics in EYFS and Key Stage 1.
