Phonics

Phonics is a method for teaching reading and writing of the English language by developing learners' phonemic awareness - the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate phonemes in order to teach the correspondence between these sounds and the spelling patterns (graphemes) that represent them.

At Summerlea we ensure the teaching and learning of phonics is fun and child-centred. In Early Years we use Jolly Phonics (a systematic synthetics phonics programme) and in Key Stage 1 we use Read Write Inc. (a phonics based literacy scheme).

These multi-sensory approaches are very motivating for children and teachers, who can see the pupils achieve.
