Friends of Summerlea School (FOSS)
The Friends Of Summerlea School (aka FOSS), is a registered charity, run by a group of parents and staff whose mission is to help to enhance the school, by raising money organising social or fundraising events which happen throughout the year.
FOSS aims to help with the little extras that are not provided by the local Authority; the things that make the school an even better place for the children to learn and grow in. Over the years, these have included improved ICT equipment such as iPads, playground markings, the Trim Trails, complimentary book bags for children when they start school, microphone equipment for school productions and gifts for the Year 6 leavers each year.
All parents and carers are automatically members of FOSS and are warmly welcomed to participate in the events and activities that FOSS organise. However, we also welcome people who can donate their time and energy to helping us with the events and activities we run in order to raise the money. Being a volunteer gives parents and carers a good opportunity to see how things work behind the scenes at school and helps to build good communication and relationships with the school community. Donating time, even if only a spare half an hour every term, not only helps us achieve our fundraising targets, but also benefits our volunteers – whether that’s building on friendships within the community, developing new skills, learning new things, encouraging baking-goddess skills by baking to sell for us or just that all-round warm glow that comes from knowing you’ve done something good for a great cause!
Above all, FOSS is about family fun though. Our aim is to provide a variety of entertaining events and activities throughout the year; some purely social and some with a real emphasis on fundraising for the grand total. So whilst helping the school, there is a really good enjoyment factor too. Events over the year can include Bingo or Quiz nights, Fun Runs, Sponsored runs or bounces, Summerlea’s Got Talent, refreshments during school productions and our big family events - the Christmas and Summer Fairs.
FOSS doesn't ask too much of you! If you have free time in the daytime or evenings, please come along to our meetings; if you have any free time on one of our event days, please help us with setting up, or if you can, spare half an hour to man a stall. If helping in these ways isn't possible, then please just support us at the different events and help us to make a difference to our children’s school lives.
